Thank you for agreeing to provide a recommendation for a Carleton-funded fellowship applicant!

**Please note that the information below applies to fellowships other than Technos International Week and the Senior Year Comps Fellowship, for which distinct recommendation procedures are used.**

As your applicant should have informed you, the recommendation request will arrive the day after the posted application due date, with a deadline five days later. The recommendation request will include the final application for your review, along with a link to the form that corresponds with the fellowship(s) for which a student is applying and to your status as a Carleton or non-Carleton recommender. Please note that the form is the only recommendation; we will no longer accept supplementary letters and ask that you use the comments spaces provided in the recommendation to elaborate on your ratings.

Most students will use a common application for several different fellowships – requiring only one recommendation – but the occasional student may apply for fellowships that require separate recommendations.

We seek your perspective on the student’s preparation to undertake the project described, as well as the merits of the project itself. Your comments will contribute to our assessment of whether the project is feasible and worthy of funding.

  • For research proposals, preparation may include coursework and prior readings or research experience
  • For more experiential proposals, preparation may include personal experience with the focus of the proposal; the maturity and flexibility required for travel; language abilities; or the like.

After all recommendations have been received, proposals are reviewed by Carleton faculty and staff and your comments are important in informing our decisions. Applicants may be encouraged to revise and re-submit proposals that are not selected for funding.

Should you have questions about the recommendations process, please feel free to contact Marynel Ryan Van Zee, Director of Student Fellowships.

Thank you, again, for your support of Carleton students and the Office of Student Fellowships!
