Director of Residential Life
WELCOME TO CARLETON!
Greetings Carls – Welcome Home!
On behalf of the Residential Life team, I’d like to welcome you not only Carleton, but more specifically to your new residential community. Your first weeks on campus are going to be filled with many new and exciting opportunities and people. Whether you’re a First-Year or a Transfer Student, your first weeks here will be packed with new experiences, new friends, and many opportunities to explore.
You’re not in this alone! Your Resident Assistant (RA) and Area Director (AD), plus the rest of the Res Life staff, are here to support you as you settle in. To get you started we have provided some helpful resources below. While you will have many enriching experiences here at Carleton, I believe being part of our residential communities is one of the most exciting opportunities ahead of you. Please review the information sent to your Carleton email account when you are ready to submit your housing and roommate questionnaire.
We look forward to meeting you soon!
Please review the term Move In and Move Out dates prior to coordinating travel for College Break Periods. On Move Out days the residential spaces will close at 2pm. Remaining on campus outside of the dates below will require Break Housing approval.

Meet Your In-Hall Staff
Carls are entering our community with varying backgrounds, experiences, and interests, which is what makes living in our communities a dynamic and enriching experience. In-Hall Residential Life staff are here to serve as a resource and help students interact as they acclimate to Carleton. In addition to providing student-led hall programs, they’re here to assist as you navigate living with another student.
Area Director
Your Area Director (AD) is a Master’s Degree level professional who oversees various residence halls and houses across campus. ADs supervise their Resident Assistant team by facilitating training and development opportunities.
Reach out to your AD if you have questions about:
- Changing your room
- Community Standards
Resident Assistant
Your Resident Assistant (RA) is a fellow Carleton student who has completed specific training to serve in their role. RA’s are great resources across a variety of needs and participate in on-call rotations during the weekends and large campus events to make sure the campus remains safe. You will also find them involved in many other aspects of campus life.
Reach out to your RA if you have questions about:
- Navigating roommate conflicts
- How to get involved in your residence community
- Connecting with other Peer Leader Groups
We work very closely with other campus partners who are connected to the residential experience. View our list of Related Services to connect to the appropriate office or department.
Room and Roommate Assignments
First Year students will be housed in Burton, Cassat, Goodhue, Musser, Myers, Nourse, or Watson. Transfer students may be housed in one of these buildings or a designated upper-class area. All students new to Carleton will have a roommate, single rooms are only provided to students with accommodations approved through the Office of Accessibility Resources (OAR). For more information about available building types and amenities, review the full list of residential spaces on campus.
In June, incoming students will receive housing information to their carleton.edu email account with instructions to complete a roommate questionnaire. This form is used in the First Year Housing Roommate Pairing Process and allows students to share their housing priorities and preferences.
Prompts include:
- Quiet Community preference
- Substance Free Community preference
- First Year Only Community preference
- Sleep time
- Guest frequency
- and more!
Students can also share additional housing environment or personal preferences in the open-field sections, which will be considered during the pairing process.
Arrival Information for Students New to Carleton
Welcome to Carleton!
We are excited to welcome you to campus and look forward to meeting you on move-in day, Tuesday, September 9! When you arrive, please proceed to your designated building check-in area which will be available for students to check in from 8:00am to 2:00pm.
STEP 1
Once you arrive, you will be instructed to unload your vehicle before finding a place to park. There will be a number of Move-In Day helpers to help unload your vehicle as well as stand with your belongings while you find a place to park.
STEP 2
New students should then proceed to the check-in table where they will pick up their room key, Carleton OneCard (student ID), and their New Student Week Name Tag. Families and guests should start bringing items up to the room along with help from Move-In Day helpers stationed at the unloading site. *It is recommended that you label your items with a name and or building and room number prior to arriving to campus.
