While the majority of residential buildings and campus services are offline during College Break Periods, the College recognizes that some students may need campus housing outside of the academic terms. Students who meet break housing criteria may apply. Applications will be reviewed and verified. Confirmation emails will be sent to those students who have been approved. Travel arrangements should not be finalized until a confirmation email has been received. Summer Housing Sections I, II, and III

Summer Housing General Information

Summer Housing is made up of three distinct sections: Commencement Week, Summer Break, and Pre-Season/Early Arrival. Students can apply for housing only for the section(s) during which they meet the outlined eligibility requirements (below). Housing is limited during Summer Section II which means not all eligible students will be able to be housed. Students are encouraged to explore off-campus options as well. Do not finalize travel until you’ve received a conformation email from Residential Life.

Eligibility Requirements

Students can apply to live in campus housing during the dates they meet the eligibility requirements (see below). As part of the approval process, all break housing requests will be verified by a supervisor, coach, professor, etc. Detailed arrival and departure instructions and required relocation timelines will be outlined in the confirmation email once an application has been approved by Residential Life. Students who are not eligible but need housing may email Residential Life directly to discuss the details of their extenuating circumstance to be considered for housing. The list outlined below applies to all summer sections. Section-specific eligibility can be found in the detailed Summer Section breakdowns.

Summer Section I: Commencement Week Housing
Tuesday, June 10 to Saturday, June 14

Earliest Possible Start Date: Tuesday, June 10
*Must have an on-campus Spring Term housing assignment. Off Campus Graduating Seniors may apply for Commencement Week Housing.

Latest Possible Departure Date: Saturday, June 14 at 2:00pm.
*Unless approved for Summer Section II. Those approved for Summer Section I and II will move into the summer building on Friday, June 13. Other groups (Reunion, SLAI, CLAE) will move on Monday, June 16 into their designated program housing.

Housing Location: Approved Summer Section I students & Graduating Seniors will remain in their Spring Term room assignment.

Required Move Dates: Students who are approved for both Summer Section I and II must be present on campus to move to the summer housing building on Friday, June 13. Other groups (Reunion, SLAI, CLAE) will move on Monday, June 16 into their designated program housing.

Cost: $150 for the week

Section Specific Eligibility: Siblings of graduating seniors; Resident Assistants, Reunion, SLAI, and CLAE employees.

Meal Plan: Required, included in the total cost. Graduating Seniors are not billed for housing or meal plans during Commencement Week.

Students who are approved for Summer Section I and II will be given specific instructions regarding when to move from their Spring Term housing assignment to their Summer Break housing assignment.

Summer Section II: Summer Break
Monday, June 16 to Sunday, August 24

Earliest Possible Arrival Date: Monday, June 16

Latest Possible Departure Date: Sunday, August 24
*Unless you are also eligible and approved for Summer Section III housing, you must move out of campus housing at this time.

Required Move Dates: Students approved for Summer Section II and III must be on campus during the week of August 25- August 29 to move to their Fall Term room assignment. Students who do not have an on campus Fall Term room assignment are not eligible to remain in housing after Sunday, August 24.

Housing Location: All summer students will be housed in Myers Hall. Roommates will be assigned based on similar arrival and departure dates. Single rooms will be reserved for students with existing accommodations through the Office of Accessibility Resources. Students working Reunion, SLAI, or CLAE will not be housed in Myers and instead be housed in the designated program buildings.

Section Specific Eligibility: Pre-Season Varsity Athletic Housing will be coordinated directly with coaches. Please contact your coach regarding specific move in dates for your team.

Cost: $14/night (meal plan is not included)

Meal Plan: Not required, information about available block plans can be found at Dining Services.

Students who are approved for Summer Section II and III will be given specific instructions regarding when to move from their Summer Break housing assignment to their Fall Term housing assignment.

*Pre Season Athletes will move out of Pre Season Housing and into Fall Term housing on a specific date which will be communicated by the coach.

Summer Section III: Early Arrival
Tuesday, September 2 through to the start of term

Students are not permitted to arrive before the approved arrival date established by their supervisor.

Early Arrival is reserved for students whose campus involvement plays an integral role in preparing the College to open for New Student Week activities. Students approved to arrive during Early Arrival will move directly into their Fall Term housing assignment. *Students who do not have an on campus Fall Term housing assignment are not eligible for Early Arrival housing.

Supervisors are responsible for sharing an Early Arrival Roster with Residential Life. Approved Early Arrival students will receive information about move-in instructions and storage in early August.

Requests to adjust an arrival date must be requested through a supervisor. Requests submitted to Residential Life will be rerouted to the supervisor or coach for approval which may delay response time.

Independent Requests
Students who are not a part of an approved early arrival group and who need to request Early Arrival Housing must email reslife@carleton.edu. Requests will be processed on a case by case basis. Students will not be permitted to arrive on or before Tuesday, September 9 (New Student Move-in Day).

Siblings to New Students
Returning students whose siblings are arriving as part of New Student Week or International Student Orientation are eligible to apply for Early Arrival Housing and are responsible for the Break Housing Costs which apply. Apply by the deadline.

Cost: $36/day (includes housing and cost of required daily meal plans)

Housing Location: Approved students will move directly into their Fall Term housing assignments. Students who do not have an on-campus Fall Term housing assignment are not eligible for housing.

Meal Plan: Required. The plan will include breakfast, lunch, and dinner and will be included in the Early Arrival costs.

Storage: Open Storage Hours will be posted in mid August. Available hours will be based on the storage records for those students scheduled to arrive on a specific date. Students who arrive outside of these hours will need to work with their supervisor to attend the next available Open Storage shift for the desired location.

Students who are approved for Summer Section II and III will be given specific instructions regarding when to move out of their Summer Break housing assignment and in to their Fall Term housing assignment.

Paying for Break Housing

Each Summer Section will be billed separately as the housing rates and available meal plans vary. As per Business Office policy, break housing costs will be billed directly to the student’s account for the student to cover.

Arrival Instructions for Break Housing

Students who have been approved for break housing must arrive on a weekday, Monday – Friday, between 9:00am and 4:30pm. Key pick-up and storage access is not available outside of normal business hours.

Students who are approved for consecutive Summer Sections should review the specific housing transition instructions in their confirmation email. Only if the reservation periods are discontinuous will a student be required to fully vacate housing and that student will be re-assigned during their next approved reservation period.

Break Dining Options

Meal plans are required during Commencement Week and during the Early Arrival period and will be included in the housing bill. Information regarding available summer dining options will be communicated by Dining Services
