Although we were not able to gather in person this year, we nonetheless marked this signal occasion as we begin a new academic year. A virtual Opening Convocation was presented on the first day of classes (Monday, September 14) at 12:30 p.m. CDT featuring remarks from President Poskanzer and a keynote address by Stacey Abrams.

Virtual Reunion

On June 20, 2020, Carleton hosted a virtual Reunion with a greeting from President Poskanzer and messages from Derek Fried ’93, president of the Alumni Council, and Karen Schilling ’78, chair of the Alumni Annual Fund Board. Additionally, we honored the 2020 Alumni Association Award recipients and celebrated the generosity and spirit of the classes of 1995 and 1970.

Commencement is Carleton College’s pinnacle event—the ultimate celebration of student accomplishment. It’s something parents and students dream about for years and work hard to achieve. Though our official commencement for the Class of 2020 has been postponed, we are excited to celebrate our graduates virtually as they close out their time at Carleton with this brief program of remarks, congratulatory messages, and the official conferring of degrees.

A Carleton treasure: Dacie Moses House

Dacie Moses, a long-time employee at Carleton, was known for inviting students to her house for cookies, Sunday brunch, and conversation. In her will, she donated her house as a gathering place for students. Dacie’s now houses two student residents and a house coordinator, and is still a shared gathering spot where students hang out, play games, study, bake cookies, share Sunday brunch and listen to the Knights and Knightingales practice. This house provides a sense of “home” for many.

Women’s Club Lacrosse team gears up for the playoffs!

Carleton’s team competes in the Upper Midwest Women’s Lacrosse League, and practice begins during winter term in the Rec Center. It’s a great time for beginners to come out and learn more about the sport before the season starts in the spring — and play moves outdoors onto the Hill of Three Oaks.

In recent years the team has made it to the playoffs, and they’re excited to make it again this year! Big game coming up this weekend — go, Knights!

Carleton hosted the “5K for Hope,” a fun run/walk on Saturday, May 11 in the Cowling Arboretum, with proceeds benefiting The Hope Center, whose mission is to create zero tolerance for sexual and domestic violence through Healing, Outreach, Prevention and Education. The Hope Center is located in Faribault, Minn., and serves all of Rice County.

Gregory Smith, the Lloyd P. Johnson-Norwest Professor of English and the Liberal Arts, recently won a 2012 Minnesota Book Award for his collection of short stories, The Law of Miracles and Other Stories.

Below is a video excerpt of Smith reading from one of the stories. The Northfield News recently ran a nice story recapping the award show, which was held on April 14, 2012, at St. Paul’s Crowne-Plaza hotel. The show was taped and later broadcasted at various times on TPT-MN and the St. Paul Neighborhood Network.

A collection of student acts called “We Speak,” celebrating Black History Month and sponsored by the Black Students Alliance (BSA), is held annually on the Carleton campus to commemorate Black History Month. Each year, Carleton students perform acts that relate to African American history and issues. Past “We Speak” shows have featured dance, vocal, dramatic, and poetry performances. Carleton media relations videographer Dan McAlister ’13 interviews Beserat Kelati ’12 (Houston, Texas) and Robert Mills ’12 (Chicago), BSA board members, about the student organization and the purpose of “We Speak” as an event.

Video: Farragut North Opens at Weitz Center for Creativity

“Farragut North,” loosely based on Howard Dean’s 2004 Democratic primary campaign, opened this past weekend at the Weitz Center for Creativity. Directed by associate professor of theater David Wiles, the play is billed as “a classic tale of hubris set against a contemporary landscape—about the lust for power and the costs one will endure to achieve it.” Presented by the Carleton Players, a video trailer of the production is available. Tickets for the performance, which continues February 24-25, are available online.
