Cultivating learning and working environments that promote productive disagreement
Description of workshop:
Cultivating diverging and dissenting viewpoints in learning and working environments is necessary to produce the critical thinking, innovation, and creativity we seek in higher education. However, both empirical studies and, frequently, personal experiences demonstrate that it has never been more difficult to disagree with peers. This has led to rapidly increasing rates of self-censorship among both faculty and students. Based on his ten years of experience at Oregon State University, Scott will discuss short- and long-term efforts to build academic and administrative cultures of critical dialogue that promote productive disagreement.
